Benjamin’s greatest passions have always been working with his hands and solving problems. Second only to these obsessions are movies and the theatre. As an only child with a lot of time on his hands and access to a huge repository of his grandparents’ old junk, he built everything from Meccano helicopters to a slaughterhouse diorama (creating a dressed carcass from a choice bit of gumtree, painted red). He dropped out of high school for a year to study at the Newcastle Art School before a brief stint in film at North Sydney TAFE. He returned to finish high school before completing a three-year Advanced Diploma in Live Production, Theatre and Events at Enmore Design Centre. He has also had the opportunity to assist local artists with their clients’ projects.
Benjamin recalls the lessons his grandfather sought to teach him as a self-made man in science, engineering, history and art. He seeks to continue applying these skills to creating art and mechanical devices for film, television and theatre. His focus for the near future is on creating paper props (newspapers and wine bottle labels, for example), as well as toys and collectibles.
