Shy Ariffin

MFA (Voice)

Syaiful is a Singaporean actor and educator. He holds a Master of Fine Arts, (Voice) and Bachelor of Arts (Hon) in Theatre Arts (Acting). Currently, he is the Voice tutor in Sydney Theatre School, responsible for both Diploma and Advance Diploma of Theatre and Screen (Acting).

In addition to his training as an actor in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, outside of his studies he has performed numerous works professionally on both stage and screen in Singapore.

Having had the privilege of practising his art through his training and on a professional level, it is evident that Syaiful takes his learning processes seriously and regards his craft with utmost importance.

He diligently practices what he is learning, while simultaneously learning to unlearn every familiar practice by trusting his capabilities. This approach pushes him further to explore and discover different types of art forms and techniques, in the search to create his own processes, as well as his own craft as an artist – placing and connecting everything into one: Mind, Body & Voice.

His voice practice is influenced by major voice professionals such as Cicely Berry, Arthur Lessac, Frederick Matthias Alexander, Barbara Houseman and Kristin Linklater. In addition, he infused Jacques Lecoq’s elements into his own pedagogy in voice practice. His style of teaching is rooted in connection of the body, breath and voice. His practice is refined from expert training in acting, voice and the knowledge of vocal anatomy and physiology in relation to how the body works. He has taught his pedagogy to different batches of acting students in Australia, UK and Singapore.
